The Challenge:

In some parts of central Auckland (especially in older areas), wastewater and stormwater flow into a combined network of pipes. When it rains heavily, stormwater can overwhelm these pipes which means that wastewater can overflow with stormwater into creeks and streams. More people in Tāmaki Makaurau should be able to enjoy clean waterways.

The Outcome:

A $1.2 billion wastewater tunnel across central Auckland, called the Central Interceptor, is being built, designed to reduce overflows and make waterways cleaner.

The Central Interceptor will be the longest tunnel in Aotearoa when completed, at 14.7 kilometres long. The tunnel will run underground from Grey Lynn to the Māngere Wastewater Treatment Plant, with several link-sewers and shafts along the route for collecting and transferring wastewater.

Construction began in August 2019 and will take six years to drill.

Our Involvement:

Resolve Group provided specialist risk management support to Watercare’s project team to identify and analyse key procurement and delivery risks. This included the facilitation of risk workshops, the anlaysis of findings and the compilation of the risk register for reporting to the project governance board. In meeting the needs of this project we drew on our specialist risk expertise, particularly in relation to tunnel projects within the Auckland region.
