Resolve Group would like to congratulate all the winners of the 2012 New Zealand Engineering Excellence Awards, announced on November 30. In particular, we would like to acknowledge the quality of the engineering work done by Beca and Fletcher Construction Company Ltd on the New Lynn Rail Trench and Station, which deservedly won the Supreme Award for New Zealand Engineering Excellence along with the Transportation Infrastructure Award.

The project, completed in March 2010, has contributed to the rejuvenation of New Lynn and NZEE Awards Judges were impressed with the commitment of the project team to minimising the inevitable disruption to the community, to their proactive approach to identifying and resolving issues, and to their commitment to sustainability as evidenced through allowances made for future electrification. The architecturally attractive station building was another key factor in their selection.

Resolve Group was involved in the New Lynn project as Engineer to the contract.

In October, Resolve Group’s Managing Director, Martin Leak, was invited to speak at the 19th Intelligent Transport Systems (ITS) World Congress, in Vienna. Discussion centred around how vital the deployment of ITS is for improved efficiency, safety, sustainability, mobility and environmental performance. With resources continuing to be limited, the central issues under discussion were how to link investment and performance, and how to define the mechanisms that connect the two.

Other speakers included Mr Kirk Steudle, President, AASHTO & Director, Michigan DOT (USA); Mrs Linda Watson, President and CEO, Capital Metropolitan Transportation Authority, (USA); Mr Kyong Soo Chon, Professor, Seoul National University (Korea); Mr Cees de Wijs, Group President, International Transportation and Government, Xerox (The Netherlands); and Mr Fotis Karamitsos, Acting Deputy Director General, European Commission, DG MOVE. The panel was chaired by Mr Peter Sweatman, Director, University of Michigan Transportation Research Institute – UMTRI (USA).
