Peter Sansom has been the Engineer’s Representative for the University Cycle Bridge portion of the Grafton Gully Cycleway. The New Zealand Transport Agency, Auckland Council and Auckland Transport have collaborated on the link’s three sections, which will eventually provide nearly 1000 kilometres of cycling routes across the city. NZTA’s Regional Director for Auckland, Mr Ernst Zöllner, says, “Working together as one, we can construct a world class cycling infrastructure for Auckland that is safe and efficient, increases the popularity of cycling, and helps take the pressure off congestion.”

The newest section consists of a bridge connecting the University of Auckland to the cycleway. Designed by Peters and Cheung, the bridge provided some unique design challenges; it is founded on piles and primarily composed of a prefabricated steel box girder in an ‘S’ shape, with precast concrete deck slabs and steel handrails. It will be open for cyclists in time for Christmas.
