• Auckland's Heritage Lifting Bridge

Auckland’s waterfront is the beating heart of the city, a place where history, culture, and modern urban life come together. From the bustling Viaduct Basin to the lively Wynyard Quarter, these spaces are connected by vital links that allow Aucklanders and visitors alike to move freely, enjoy the harbour, and celebrate the city’s unique maritime identity. At the centre of this connectivity is the Heritage Bascule Bridge, with its distinctive character and historical significance, a reminder of Auckland’s working waterfront past. Carefully planned maintenance ensures this engineering treasure continues to function safely while honouring its legacy. Built in 1932, this rolling lift bridge is still a vital link in Auckland city centre. As part of the long-term maintenance plan for this heritage asset, Auckland Council commissioned the replacement of the aging timber decking with Australian hardwood, plus repairs and recoating to the under-deck structural steel and new balustrades. In 2025 phase 2 commenced with repairs and recoating of the upper structural steel.

This ongoing care reflects the principle of kaitiakitanga,  guardianship and stewardship of our shared environment and heritage. By maintaining these vital assets, we are not only preserving the stories of the past but also ensuring Auckland’s waterfront remains a safe, vibrant, and accessible space for current and future generations. These bridges are more than infrastructure; they are enablers of connection, community, and culture, linking the city to its harbour and its people to each other.

Resolve Group has been delighted to be part of the project team delivering the upgrade to this heritage asset.
