The Project:
- Dynac is an Intelligent Transport Management System (ITMS), hosted at the Auckland and Wellington Transport Operations Centres, designed to ensure the public receives up-to-date traveler and incident management information to improve travel reliably and safety
- It is the core (backbone) ITMS system, linking other subsidiary systems together, including Waterview’s SIDERA system, and future integrations with key assets yet to be opened
- It is a key part of Waka Kotahi’s technology roadmap, and has a strong collaborative relationship with Kapsch Trafficon (formerly Transdyn, Inc) that has been in place since 2008
Dynac Application Management:
Following a successful implementation phase of the Dynac System in Auckland and Wellington, Resolve Group then took management responsibility for the operational maintenance and support of the core system. By working closely with Waka Kotahi’s project governance and subject matter experts, and also the vendor, Resolve Group coordinated the various aspects of change and release management to ensure that Dynac remained up to date, and ‘in step’ with a number of other complimentary and subsidiary systems. Led by Steve Griffith, this work focused largely on balancing the level of available technical support resources against ever changing needs of the client. This level of complexity was significantly multiplied by the considerable number of capital project integrations required at the time: Wellington and Auckland Tunnels, AMETI, Southern Corridor Improvements, Northern Belfast Bypass and PekaPeka to Otaki to name a few. Through carefully planned test and release management cycles based on best industry practice, Resolve Group was able to ensure that Dynac; Waka Kotahi’s core ITMS system; remained configurable and future proof against future needs and objectives.
Resolve Group:
- Provided project management services and acted as Engineer to the Contract in initial implementation of Dynac in Auckland and Wellington, in 2011
- Has been facilitating coordination between the SIDERA System (used for the Waterview tunnel) and the national Dynac system (used for general road traffic) since 2018
- Has ensured response plans created by both systems are kept ‘in step’ with one another, as software updates and patches are released to both systems, so technical changes to the Waterview system integrate successfully with the rest of the network, and vice versa
Dynac Response Plans:
It is essential that response plans created by complimentary ITMS systems are kept ‘in step’ with one another. In New Zealand, software updates and patches are released to both the nationwide Dynac ITMS system, and also the Waterview Tunnel SIDERA system. This ensures technical changes to the Waterview system integrate successfully with the rest of the network, and vice versa
Resolve Group:
- Provided project management services and acted as Engineer to the Contract in the core implementation of Dynac in Auckland and Wellington, between 2008 and 2015 (including the system enhancement phases)
- Has been facilitating coordination between the SIDERA System (used for the Waterview tunnel) and the national Dynac system (used for general road traffic) since 2018 (Pete – you’ve been doing this since about 2015 – is this correct?)
Preparation of OHVD design standards:
A Review and update of Waka Kotahi NZTA’s ITS Standards and Specifications documents, relating to Over Height Vehicle Detection and Warning systems. As a result of this work, there are now a number of Over Height Vehicle Detection and Warning sites installed on motorways throughout New Zealand (Penrose Rd, Waterview; Johnstone’s Hill Tunnels; Wellington and Lyttleton Tunnels)
Resolve Group:
As a member of the ITS Panel, assisted with reviewing, creating, and updating the ITS Standards and Specifications, including School Zone Signs, Variable Message Signs, Lane Control Signs, and Overheight Vehicle Detection and Warning Systems
Development of Variable Message Sign (VMS) Specification:
Development of VMS Specifications for procurement purposes as part of Waka Kotahi NZTA’s ITS Standards and Specifications
Resolve Group:
- Commissioned to develop the VMS Specification, taking into account the best VMS technology available, and best industry practice in VMS procurement
- Involved in the subsequent industry consultation, assessment of feedback from suppliers and integrators, and specification update
